Man died after being hit by 'a number of vehicles' on dual carriageway, inquest told

A man died after being "struck by a number of vehicles" on a dual carriageway in Swansea, an inquest has heard.

Jonathan Michael Bowen, of Heol Rhosyn, in Morriston, was hit by multiple vehicles after walking towards traffic on the southbound carriageway of the A4067, in Morriston, at around 2.40am on Friday, September 25.

An inquest into his death, held at Swansea Guildhall on Tuesday, heard that the 48-year-old had "jumped" in front of a Mercedes van which had initially switched lanes to avoid hitting him between the roundabout for junction 45 of the M4 and the A48 Clase Road.

Mr Bowen, known as Jon, was described as being "very good" at gymnastics at an early age and represented Wales before going on to become a carpenter in later life.

The inquest was told that Mr Bowen began using drugs and drinking "excessively" resulting in his work attendance becoming poor before he stopped working completely and he was later placed on a methadone prescription.

After the birth of his son he "moderated his drinking" and began working again. However Mr Bowen's drinking "started to increase" after moving back to his family's home a few weeks before his death after separating from his partner at the time.

South Wales Police PC Rhys Davies told the inquest that in the hours before he died Mr Bowen had been captured on CCTV in Sway Road, Morriston, in an "intoxicated state" before heading to the nearby McDonald's at around 12.20am where staff members described him as "not making any sense" and "slurring his words".

PC Davies said: "He headed towards the McDonald's restaurant where he ordered food. He went outside to the seating area where he fell asleep for an hour and a half before staggering about.

"He was seen walking towards the A4067. He was seen walking on the southbound carriageway towards traffic on the A4067.

"A white Mercedes Sprinter van was travelling southbound in lane one before moving into lane two. The Sprinter van moved to lane one and he jumped in front and collided with him.

"He was then hit by a further two vehicles, a Mercedes A180 and a Hyundai i30, causing further injuries. It is unclear which vehicle caused the fatal injuries."

Reading a statement from the driver of the Mercedes Sprinter van PC Davies said: "He believes he was driving at around 50mph in lane one. He saw a person wearing dark clothing walking towards him in lane one.

"He began to slow and moved towards lane two and the person moved towards lane two. He moved back to lane one and the deceased jumped in front of him."

The drivers of the Mercedes A180 and Hyundai i30 both noted seeing the Mercedes van with its hazard lights on but despite moving into the other lane they also collided with Mr Bowen.

The inquest heard that a few weeks before his death Mr Bowen had been seen "walking up" the A48 Clase Road.

A post-mortem examination report detailed how Mr Bowen suffered multiple injuries as a result of being hit by a number of vehicles while a toxicology report revealed he had an alcohol concentration of 146mg per 100ml in his vitreous humour, with 80mg being the legal drink-drive limit.

Recording a road traffic collision conclusion, acting senior coroner for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Colin Phillips said: "This is just a tragic accident where he is not in control of his own actions and the driver of the first vehicle would have had no time to react. He died as a result of being struck by a number of vehicles. He was intoxicated at the time and my view is that he was not in control of his actions."

Mr Bowen's brother Steve previously paid tribute to him on behalf of his family, calling him a man "who was well-liked by all who knew him".

The statement said: "Jon was an honest, hardworking man who was well-liked by all who knew him. He always had time to stop and chat to the people he knew and would meet in the street. He loved nothing more than to spend time fishing or mountain biking with his son Jake.

"Jon’s family and friends are devastated by his sudden passing and we will forever cherish the precious memories we have of him."
