The Manchester Evening News understands that police were called to the tram stop at Exchange Square on Monday evening to reports that a man had a knife.

He was detained at the scene and is not believed to have brandished the knife.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Metrolink tweeted: "Due to a police incident at Exchange Square, all East Didsbury Services are currently operating via Market Street and not calling at Exchange Square.

"All other services are unaffected.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

A spokesperson for GMP confirmed: "Police were called to reports of a man with a knife at Exchange Square tram stop.
