One man has appealed to Reddit users for advice after his Christmas present for his wife went down like a led balloon.
The man committed what appears to some as a ‘cardinal sin’ and bought his wife a gym membership as a surprise for Christmas.
Thinking he had struck gold with the idea, the man revealed the present to his wife and instead of what he thought would be a magical moment, the couple entered into a blazing row.
He said: “Bought the wife a gym membership for Christmas shes found out im in the dog house know any ideas to help me get out.
“Wife has gotten a bit portly over the pandemic shes being saying she wanted to join a gym. I thought it would be a nice present.
“I told her this week I had gotten it for her. She f***ing flipped out saying you think I'm fat I kinda said well you've put on weight since the pandemic and were talking about joining one I thought it would be a nice gift.
“She said a nice gift would be jewellery or something and I'm a horrible f***er for getting her what I got. Thoughts lads I don't think I'm wrong?”
Reddit users were quick to point out where the man could have gone wrong.
One person said: “’...well you've put on weight since the pandemic...’ . It was at this point where you not only started digging your own hole but you started digging it with a JCB.”
Others felt the man was too far gone and should just commit to the situation.
They said: “There is no way out, I think it is time to double down. Buy her some gym clothing as a further incentive!”
While a third had some good advice that might help the man on his journey towards forgivenss.
They said: “well I think you're heart was in the right place at least if you genuinely thought she would appreciate it. . . .but yeah, my guess is she's a little insecure at the moment and that will not have helped at all.
“My advice would be to say you genuinely bought it coz you thought she would have appreciated it, but you understand now how insensitive it might have come across. . . reassure her you love her no matter what and buy her something she will actually really like!
“If you're still worried about her health offer to go with her to the gym and do a program together so you can both get healthier at the same time. . .”
