Man describes horrific pain and 'steaming legs' after being struck by lightning

A man has opened up about the intense pain he felt when he was struck by lightening.

Eric Brocklebank, who is lucky to be alive after the encounter, appeared on This Morning and revealed that he was still receiving treatment after suffering severe internal injuries.

Explaining where he had been at the time, Eric told hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford: "I was on an air base with air cadets during a regional competition.

"I stood there, rain started to come down, collar up, looking forward to the cadets, there was no time to plan when there was a flash, directly in front of me - just missed my face.

"It was a big whoosh, not a big bang. It went straight past and hit the fence."

Eamonn questioned: "How did it hit you?"

"It hit me directly the second time when I took the air cadets back for safety into a big tent," Eric explained. "I took four cadets with me and I said to them, 'Hot chocolate, hot water, be very careful'.

"When I split the [bread] rolls, I got the tongs to pick the frankfurter sausages up, I put them into the rolls and went to get another one out and then whoosh! It struck the tongs that I was holding."

A stunned Eamonn responded: "Eric, the obvious question, what on earth did that feel like?"

Eric replied: "To describe it is very, very difficult. The pain and screaming was unbelievable. It hit me and it went through my arms and the pain went through me directly to my feet and my legs were really, really hot.

"The bones in my leg were steaming. My wife bent down to take my shoes off to find out what was damaged for the first aiders and my feet were steaming.

"I'd lost my toenail!"

The Air Cadets worked CPR on Eric until the ambulances arrived, but he is still suffering the after-effects of the accident to this day.

"I'm still having treatment after all this time," he said. "It damaged me totally, internally, with scar tissue on my lung. A gentleman's problem, a prostate problem, lots and lots of different problems."
