Man describes horrific moment he is attacked by 20 to 30 youths in broad daylight in Leeds city centre

A group of around '20 or 30' youngsters attacked a man outside Leeds Corn Exchange in broad daylight after trying to force him to hand over money.

The 19-year-old victim, who did not wish to be named, was knocked unconscious after being headbutted in the mouth by a black male and repeatedly punched in the back of the head during the violent scenes.

The incident happened on Assembly Street in Leeds city centre at around 3pm on Thursday, October 3, as the man was walking through town to meet friends.

The victim has told LeedsLive that the incident has left him afraid to leave his own home.

"I was walking through Leeds to meet my friends when the group came up to me," he said.

"They said they wanted money and they ripped my pocket trying to get my wallet.

"Then they headbutted me in the mouth and kept punching me in the back of the head. When they knocked me out I fell onto my hip."

Once the man regained consciousness, he ran away from the scene and contacted police, but he is still recovering from the injuries sustained a week on from the attack.

'I feel like I can't go anywhere'

He said: "I was in pure fear so I ran. It's made me panic a lot.

"My teeth are pretty messed up.

"I feel like I can't go anywhere and I just want to stay in my house."

West Yorkshire Police are carrying out enquiries into the incident and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed it or who has any information that could assist the investigation.

You can help by calling the Leeds District Crime Team via 101 quoting crime reference 13190508218.
