A man has died after attempting to save two children who appeared to be in distress in the sea.

The 60-year-old entered the sea just after 4pm on Sunday close to the Promenade in Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire.

Police said the man got into difficulty in the water and sadly died at the scene.

They have not given any information about the identity of the man.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this very sad time.”

Police did not give any further details about the children involved in the incident.

Earlier that day, officials warned tourists and locals to avoid Ingoldmells promenade due to a “serious incident within the water”.

People took to social media to express their condolences.

One person said: “Rest in peace to the man who died a hero. I hope this gives his loved ones a little bit of comfort at this heartbreaking time. My heart goes out to everyone involved.”

Another said: “This has absolutely broken my heart. What a true hero sending love and prayers to all his family.”

Ingoldmells is a popular seaside destination which lies three miles north from the resort town of Skegness.

The village is home to Butlins Skegness as well as the amusement park Fantasy Island.
