Man denies taking part in anti-coronavirus protest

A man has denied taking part in an anti-coronavirus protest on Berry Street in Liverpool city centre.

Anthony Hewitt, also known as Anthony Roughley, was arrested following the gathering on November 14 last year, where hundreds turned up to protest coronavirus rules.

The 32-year-old was charged with criminal damage and with breaching coronavirus legislation by participating in a gathering of two or more people.

Hewitt appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today faced with the charges.

Ben Stanley prosecuted the case this afternoon while Colin Rawson represented Hewitt.

Hewitt, of Parkfield Road, Aigburth, wore blue jeans and a dark jacket as he stood in the dock.

He spoke to confirm his name, age and address and admitted the charge of criminal damage but denied breaching coronavirus legislation.

Magistrates Janet Dalton and Geoff Shaw listed the case for a trial on August 25 at Liverpool Magistrates' Court in the morning.

Hewitt was released on unconditional bail until that date.

Magistrates told Hewitt that he would be sentenced for the charge of criminal damage following the trial.
