Man denies marrying his cousin, 81, just to avoid the military

A 24-year-old man allegedly married his 81-year-old cousin "to avoid doing military service".

Alexander Kondratyuk has denied that he tied the knot with his disabled relative just to skip a stint in the army, which is required of every Ukrainian man.

The only exceptions are if someone is disabled or the carer of someone with disabilities, which is the case with Kondratyuk's wife.

Kondratyuk is being investigated by Ukrainian officials after claims that the marriage is just to bypass the legal requirement.

Local reporters spoke with Zinaida Illarionovna, 81, but she was adamant her husband is very caring and looks after.

However, their neighbours said they have never seen him visit despite him claiming to live with his spouse.

One said the elderly lady is "much more likely to be visited by her nephews, grandchildren and sisters than by her supposed husband".

Commissioner Aleksandr Danilyuk, who runs the Vinnitsa Commissariat, says that because Kondratyuk holds the documentation to prove he's the carer of his wife, there is nothing they can do.

However, lawyer, Roman Korchenyuk, said: "If they prove that there is no valid marriage, and that there is no common household, then he can be called up to do military service."
