Man denies attempting to murder woman by stabbing her in the neck

A man has denied attempting to murder a woman by stabbing her in the neck at a Southport house.

Leslie Marshall is accused of trying to kill Amanda Marshall at a property on Virginia Street in the town.

Police were called to the home at around 9.30am on June 25 to reports a 48-year-old woman had suffered knife wounds.

Ms Marshall was taken to hospital where she was initially in a critical condition, but police subsequently confirmed her condition had improved to stable.

Marshall, 50, initially appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on June 29 and the case was sent straight to the crown court, where he appeared today via a video link wearing a grey t-shirt with black hair and a grey beard.

Ben Jones, prosecuting the case, explained the Crown sought to add an alternative count of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Judge David Aubrey, QC, accepted the application and Marshall, who was represented by Lloyd Morgan, subsequently pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and wounding with intent.

Judge Aubrey confirmed there were "injuries to the neck" and "other injuries" which were caused "with use of a knife".

The judge told Marshall: "Your trial is listed, Mr Marshall, for November 29.

"You will be produced at this building to stand trial."

Marshall was remanded into custody until his trial, which is anticipated to last between three and five days.
