Man demands cash from elderly neighbours in cruel door to door scam

Elderly and vulnerable people were targeted by a man trying to con them out of money for jobs he hadn't done, police say.

Officers were informed of a man knocking at the homes of elderly residents on Hillside Avenue, Huyton, and demanding money.

In one case, the scammer got an unsuspecting resident to hand over money before he's believed to have made off in a white van.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "This was not a criminal offence as the money was handed over.

"Leaflets have been handed out in the area in order to prevent this happening to others."

Knowsley Police said: "We have been made aware of a male knocking on the doors of vulnerable and elderly people in the area of Hillside Avenue .

"The male has been demanding money for work that has not been carried out.

"On one occasion, an elderly person has handed money over to the male at which point he has made off possibly in a white van. "

Officers advised residents to 'take a moment to think' before parting with information or money when receiving callers such as this as only criminals will rush or panic you

Police also reminded residents to ensure any work was specifically requested work, and that it has been completed, before paying for anything.
