Man dead, woman injured in stabbings on South, West sides

March 08--A man died and a woman was critically hurt after they were stabbed in separate incidents Saturday on the south and west sides.

A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death by his girlfriend's ex-husband around 4:09 p.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The man was leaving the Burger King restaurant in the 2000 block of West 47th Street with his girlfriend when he was stabbed several times in the chest and neck area by a 39-year-old man, his girlfriend's former husband, police said.

The 40-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and was later pronounced dead there, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the fatality and said the man's identification is being withheld until the next of kin is notified.

Another man who witnessed the stabbing was also hurt while trying to stop the 39-year-old, police said. He was treated and released from an area hospital, police said.

The 39-year-old man was in custody as police investigated the incident.

Later, a 22-year-old woman was in critical condition after being stabbed around 10:15 p.m. in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The woman was inside a residence in the 100 block of North Long Avenue when she was stabbed in the neck during a domestic-related incident, police said.

The woman was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition, Gaines said.

As of early Sunday morning, no one was in custody as a result of the stabbing.
