Man dead, at least 20 hurt in shootings

May 22--A man was killed and at least 20 other people have been wounded in separate shootings since Saturday afternoon across the city, authorities said.

A 26-year-old man died after getting shot in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side about 7:30 p.m., said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was walking in the 7000 block of South Carpenter Street when two attackers emerged from an alley and fired shots.

He was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Alfaro said.

Most recently, about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, a 25-year-old woman walked into a hospital after being shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.

The woman was standing outside in the 4100 block of West Adams Street when a male attacker fired shots at her. She was hit in the abdomen and in the right arm.

She managed to get to St. Anthony Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.

In other shootings:

--Three men were wounded in a shooting about 2:45 a.m. in the South Austin neighborhood, Alfaro said. A 36-year-old man, a 35-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were standing on the corner in the 5100 block of West Madison Street when they heard shots and realized they were struck, Alfaro said. The oldest man was shot in both legs and was taken to Stroger Hospital. The 35-year-old man was shot in the right elbow and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The youngest man was hit in the right foot, and he was at West Suburban Medical Center. The conditions of all three had been stabilized, Alfaro said.

--Five minutes earlier, about 2:40 a.m., a 27-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were wounded in a shooting in the Lawndale neighborhood, Alfaro said. The two were sitting in a vehicle in the 3900 block of West Grenshaw Street when a male attacker walked up and fired shots, Alfaro said. The woman was shot in the right thigh and buttocks. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, Alfaro said. The man was shot in the face, and he managed to get to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized as well, Alfaro said.

--About 11:50 p.m. Saturday, a 27-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the South Austin neighborhood, Alfaro said. The man was walking in the alley in the 500 block of South Cicero Avenue when a vehicle approached him. Two attackers got out of the vehicle and fired shots, Alfaro said. The man was shot in both legs and the groin, Alfaro said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

--About 9:55 p.m., an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were wounded in a shooting in the Bronzeville neighborhood, Alfaro said. The man and the boy were standing in an alley in the 4600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when a gunman walked up and fired shots. Gunfire hit the 18-year-old in the back and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, Alfaro said. The 17-year-old was shot in the left foot, and he later managed to get to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, Alfaro said.

--About 8:35 p.m., three men were wounded in a shooting in the Englewood neighborhood, Alfaro said. The men were standing near a vehicle in the 6300 block of South Normal Boulevard when they heard gunshots and realized they were hit. A 31-year-old man was shot in the back, and he drove himself about three miles south to 7800 block of South Throop Street near St. Sabina Catholic Church where his family members live. An ambulance then was called to that address, and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, Alfaro said. A 27-year-old man was shot in both feet, and a 21-year-old man was hit in the left foot. Both drove themselves to St. Bernard Hospital, where they were listed in good condition.

--About 7:30 p.m., a 19-year-old man was critically hurt in a shooting in the West Pullman neighborhood, Alfaro said. He was inside a parked vehicle in the 11500 block of South Stewart Avenue when a dark-colored SUV pulled up behind him and someone inside it fired shots, Alfaro said. He was hit in the back and in the chest, and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, Alfaro said.

--Also at 7:30 p.m., a 26-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting in the 1600 block of West 89th Street in the Gresham neighborhood, Alfaro said. Police officers responded to calls of a person shot and found the woman inside an apartment building on the second floor. She suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and she was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.

--Earlier, at 7:02 p.m., three men were wounded in a shooting in the 4300 block of West Hirsch Street in the city's West Humboldt Park neighborhood, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago police spokesman. The three men were standing outside when an unknown male attacker wearing a hooded sweatshirt confronted them on foot and fired several shots, hitting a 29-year-old in the back, an 18-year-old in the buttocks and an 19-year-old in the right hand, said Quaid. The 29-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, the 18-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition and the 19-year-old was taken to Norwegian American Hospital in good condition, Quaid said. The shooter was not in custody and a motive was not known.

--In another attack, at 6:16 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 92nd Street in the city's Brainerd neighborhood, a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest, said Quaid. He was walking west on 92nd Street when a green car drove past him and fired several shots hitting him. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in good condition, Quaid said.

--About 6:10 p.m., a 28-year-old woman was shot in the left leg as she was about to cross the street in the 6600 block of South Champlain Avenue in the city's West Woodlawn neighborhood, Quaid said. She heard gunshots and then felt pain and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where her condition has stabilized.

--A 21-year-old was on foot in the 3600 block of West 13th Street in the West Side's Lawndale neighborhood when a vehicle drove up to him and someone inside it fired shots, hitting him in the abdomen at 4:36 p.m., Quaid said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
