July 31--A man was killed and at least 18 others have been wounded since Thursday afternoon across the city, police said.
Around 11:40 p.m., a 35-year-old man was shot to death and a 19-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.
Both men were standing on a sidewalk in the 8900 block of South Houston Avenue when someone fired shots from a passing vehicle, Greer said.
The 35-year-old was hit in the upper left chest and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His body was inside a home in front of where the shooting happened, police said.
The 19-year-old was struck in the left leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition stabilized, police said.
Early Friday, no one was in custody as a result of the shooting, and police were still investigating.
At the scene, officers blocked off about half a block with yellow police tape on Houston Avenue between 89th and 90th streets.
Red police tape cordoned off the entrance into a two-story home, nestled next to a church.
Some neighbors came outside and watched officers search for evidence and take pictures of shell casings, which were on the sidewalk and in the street. Some residents said they heard about six gunshots.
Several relatives of the two men who were shot gathered near the scene.
A woman in a long black dress cried as she talked on the phone.
Another woman, who said her niece was the 35-year-old man's girlfriend, walked up to the yellow tape, tying to find out what happened.
She said the couple moved from Northwest Side to their new home in the 8900 block of South Houston this week.
"They moved here to try to get away from this sh--," the woman said. "They haven't been here even 24 hours."
Most recently, a 22-year-old man was critically wounded after he was shot several times in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
Around 4:50 a.m. Friday, the man was discovered unresponsive in the 4300 block of South Wood Street with gunshot wounds to his chest and neck, Pacheco said, citing preliminary information.
He was taken to Stroger Hospital where doctors were able to revive him. He is listed in critical condition, Pacheco said.
Around 4:20 a.m., a 21-year-old man walked into Weiss Memorial Hospital after getting shot in the Uptown neighborhood, Pacheco said.
The man was shot several times in the back in the 5000 block of North Kenmore Avenue, Pacheco said, citing preliminary information.
A friend drove the man to the hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
Around 2:05 a.m., a 21-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the South Side, Greer said.
Police officers heard gunshots and found the man outside in the 6000 block of South Maplewood Avenue, Greer said.
The man had gunshot wounds to the chest and groin and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition stabilized, Greer said.
Around 1:40 a.m., a 20-year-old man and a 45-year-old man were wounded in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, Greer said.
The 20-year-old was talking in the 10700 block of South Wentworth Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he had been shot in the leg. He was taken to Roseland Community Hospital where his condition stabilized, Greer said.
The 45-year-old was driving a car on the same block when he also heard gunshots and realized he was hit in the leg, Greer said. He drove himself to Roseland Hospital where his condition also stabilized, Greer said.
About 1:15 a.m., two men in their 20s were wounded in a shooting in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side, Greer said.
Both were in the 9800 block of South Morgan Street when they were shot, Greer said, citing preliminary information.
One man had wounds to the arm and wrist, and the second man was struck in the face and leg, Greer said. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
About 11:30 p.m. Thursday, a 49-year-old man was wounded in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side, Greer said.
The man was sitting with other people on the front porch of a home in the 7400 block of South Kenwood Avenue when an unknown attacker walked up and fired shots, Greer said.
The man had graze wounds to his abdomen and was listed in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Greer said.
Around the same time, at 11:30 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the Marquette Park neighborhood, Greer said.
The man was walking in the 6400 block of South Whipple Street when an unknown attacker walked up and fired shots, Greer said.
The man was grazed in the leg and was hit in the hand. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where his condition stabilized, Greer said.
Around 11:05 p.m., a 29-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were wounded during a shooting in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Greer said.
The men were standing on a sidewalk in the 1100 block of West 59th Street when an unknown male attacker walked up and and opened fire, Greer said.
The 29-year-old was hit in the left leg, and the 24-year-old was struck in the right leg. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital where their conditions stabilized, Greer said.
Around 6:30 p.m., a 37-year-old man was shot at in the 6900 block of North Lakewood Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.
The man was shot in the right arm and taken in good condition to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to police and Fire Department officials.
Following the shooting, the man drove or was driven in a gray minivan to an alley southwest of Glenwood and North Shore Avenues, where he was stopped because the alley was blocked by a U-Haul moving van. Police set up crime scene tape in the alley, and the van remained in the alley until about 11 p.m., when it was towed.
At 6:10 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was shot in the Little Village neighborhood, police said.
The woman was in serious condition after she was shot in the 2200 block of South Sawyer Avenue, according to police. The woman was on the street when a blue Pontiac drove up and someone began firing, hitting the woman in the chest, police said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
In a separate shooting, a 25-year-old man was wounded in the 200 block of West 87th Street in the West Chatham neighborhood, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokesowman.
The victim and another man were in a verbal altercation related to a narcotics transaction when the suspect took out a gun and shot the man in the abdomen, police said.
The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, police said. The suspect fled in a black van, police said.
Earlier, someone shot two people in the 5900 block of South Maplewood Avenue in the city's Chicago Lawn neighborhood about 2:30 p.m., said Officer Nicole Trainor, a police spokeswoman.
One of the shooting victims, a 20-year-old man, got himself to Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, while the other male, whose age was unknown, had a graze wound, but hospital information was not available, Trainor said.
Another shooting happened at 12:50 p.m., when someone in a passing SUV fired shots, hitting a 26-year-old man in the right arm in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue, she said.
No one is in custody, and detectives are investigating.
