
One man is dead and another in police custody after an early morning assault.
Emergency services were called to Cambridge Ave in Raymond Terrace, north of Newcastle, just before 2am on Tuesday following reports a man was found with serious head injuries.
Paramedics attended the scene and treated the 38-year-old man, but he was pronounced dead.
A 29-year-old man was taken into custody after police were told the injured man was involved in an altercation, during which he was reportedly assaulted.
He was taken to Raymond Terrace police station before being transferred to Maitland Hospital for assessment.
A crime scene has been established while police investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
