Man dead after shooting in west Belfast

A man in his 30s was shot in west Belfast on Saturday.

After being rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds, he was later pronounced dead.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has commenced a murder investigation following the incident, which took place at Rodney Drive, west of the city’s Park Centre, shortly after 4.30 pm.

The man has been named locally as Mark Hall, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

Mr Hall was recently acquitted of charges involving the possession of firearms and drugs.

He was previously arrested in 2020 after he was accused of possessing a sawn-off shotgun, pistol and ammunition.

He also faced two counts of possessing a Class A drug and one count of possessing a Class C drug and was later acquitted of all charges.

Local People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll said in a Tweet: “There is absolutely no place or justification for these heinous acts. My thoughts tonight are with the victim, their family and everyone impacted by this barbaric and awful incident.”

In another tweet, he said: “Horrific to hear another shooting happen this evening in West Belfast. I have been on the ground tonight speaking with residents in the St. James area and people are disgusted and outraged that guns have been brought out and used once again in our communities.”

The PSNI has asked anyone with any information about this incident to call on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1466 18/12/21. You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/.
