A missing man has been found dead after a Scots cargo ship crashed into a container vessel from Denmark.
The Scot Carrier, which was destined for Montrose, collided with the Karin Hoej around 3.30am on Monday, December 13. The casualty was on-board the Danish vessel.
The incident took place in the Baltic Sea between Ystad, Sweden and the nearby island of Bornholm.
Screaming was reported at 4:45am, according to Jonas Franzen, communications manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
While the Scots vessel is functional and the crew is safe, the Karin Hoej has capsized with the other remaining member still missing.
Denmark's Joint Operations Centre (JOC) said there was no sign that lifeboats or other emergency equipment were used by the pair.
Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare said people cannot normally survive for over an hour without protective gear in waters that cold.
Swedish Coastguard operations leader Fredrik Gustafsson said: "Once the ship is aground ... divers can search for the missing crew members as well as minimize the risks for any oil spill."
Soren Hoj, managing director of Rederiet Hoj which owns the Danish vessel told Reuters: "I can confirm an accident has happened but I do not know the circumstances."
Now, gross negligence and gross marine intoxication are being looked at as causes for the incident, according to the Swedish Coastguard.
It had initially been thought that the reason may have been fog causing poor visibility.
Registered to Inverness, the Scot Carrier recently left Salacgriva, Latvia, and was set to arrive in Montrose at 5pm on Wednesday.
The Karin Hoej was travelling between Sodertalje, Sweden and Nykøbing Falster, Denmark and had been due at noon on Tuesday.
The Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) said the Danish vessel was empty of cargo and it's unclear whether The Scot Carrier had anything on board.
Scotline, owner of the Scottish vessel, said it could not comment on details but was assisting local authorities.
