Man dead after gunshots ring through Melbourne street

A man has been found dead in a suburban street in Melbourne's north following a shooting.

The 21-year-old victim's body outside a house in Coronet Avenue, Roxburgh Park after shots were heard about 12:30am.

Police said a number of men were seen on the street when shots were fired, but no arrests have been made.

Neighbours reported hearing a series of loud bangs.

Saad Lebdeh, who lives in the street, said he did not realise the sounds were gunshots.

"Who listens for gunshots at that time of night?" he said.

"I just thought it was someone banging something out there."

Mr Lebdeh said the shooting was unusual for the area.

He said the victim had recently moved into the street and "kept to themselves".

"The street's pretty quiet and the area's fairly good — it's quite out of the ordinary, we've never had any issues at all," he said.

"It's quite unsettling to think you've got that kind of violence in the street."

Another man who lives in the street, Julian, said it was a quiet street and not many residents socialised together.

"[It's] pretty shocking, it sort of puts things into perspective," he said.

"I think everyone's going to be peering through the blinds for the next couple of days until things blow over."
