Man dead after crashing while fleeing police in Yass

A man is dead after the car he was driving crashed while fleeing police in Yass.

NSW police said they had launched a critical incident investigation into the death,which happened about 11.45pm Sunday.

Officers had been patrolling the Yass CBD, when they tried to stop a vehicle on Laidlaw Street.

"Police activated their lights; however, the vehicle failed to stop and was discovered a short distance away after it has left the roadway and crashed into a tree," they said in a statement.

"The driver, a man believed to be aged 34, died at the scene."

A critical incident team from Monaro Police District will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to independent review, and information will be provided to the coroner.
