Man dead after being knocked down by tram during early morning rush hour

A man has died after being hit by a tram during the morning commute.

The collision happened near to the Shaw and Crompton tram stop in Oldham, Greater Manchester, just before 6am on Friday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Greater Manchester Police.

The force has launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses.

The incident has closed the line and caused disruption for commuters.

Manchester Metrolink wrote on Twitter: "Services on the Rochdale line are operating from Oldham Mumps to East Didsbury in either direction at this time due to a police incident near the Shaw and Crompton stop."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly before 5.55am this morning, police were called to reports that a tram had collided with a man near to the Shaw and Crompton tram stop.

“The man has sadly been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish how the man came to be on the tracks.

“The tram line in the immediate area is currently closed.

GMP Oldham tweeted: "There is currently an ongoing police incident. Road closures are in place on Bullcote Lane and Cop Road."
