Man dead, 3 injured in separate shootings

Jan. 10--A man was fatally shot and three other men were wounded in separate shootings on the West Side on Friday evening, police said.

In the latest shooting, a 35-year-old man died and a 31-year-old man was injured after a shooting around 10:40 p.m. in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, said Chicago police spokesman Ron Gaines.

The two were standing outside in the 0-100 block of South Kostner Avenue when they heard gunshots and were wounded, Gaines said.

The 35-year-old was shot in the stomach and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was later pronounced dead, said Chicago police spokesman Hector Alfaro.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not confirm the fatality immediately.

The 31-year-old was shot in his left calf and right ankle and was able to make it to Rush University Medical Center. His condition stabilized there, Alfaro said.

At the scene, police officers blocked off part of Kostner Avenue from Monroe to Madison streets with yellow tape. A neighborhood grocery store, a barber shop and a boarded-up building were on one side of the street, and a three-story building and a parking lot filled with U-Haul trucks lined the other side.

Behind the crime scene tape, a Styrofoam takeout box and a red plastic cup sat on the sidewalk. A couple of feet over, a red cap was lying on the ground. Two other pieces of clothing also lay nearby.

Less than a mile away, a 21-year-old man was wounded in another shooting around 10:17 p.m., Gaines said.

The man was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked car in the 4000 block of West West End Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he was shot in the leg, Gaines said.

He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Gaines said.

No other information about the shooting was immediately available.

Around 7 p.m., a 25-year-old man was wounded in what appeared to be a gang-related shooting in the McKinley Park neighborhood, police said.

The man was getting a haircut inside a barbershop in the 2100 block of West 35th Street when a masked offender came in and fired shots, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

As of Saturday morning, no one was in custody as a result of the Friday shootings.
