Man damaged car outside pub and returned to the scene armed with tool

A man involved in a row outside an Easton pub damaged a car and returned to the scene armed with a screwdriver.

Carl Foster tussled with Anthony Ross outside the Plough Inn, Bristol Crown Court heard.

After kicking Mr Ross' car and bashing it with a hammer, Foster returned - in a different car and wearing different clothes - carrying a screwdriver.

He left the scene when he saw a police car, the court was told.

Father-of-four Foster, 41, of Trowbridge Road in Bristol, pleaded guilty to having an offensive weapon, damaging property and driving otherwise in accordance with his licence in July last year.

Judge Michael Cullum handed him a 12-month community order with 200 hours of unpaid work.

Foster was told to pay £250 prosecution costs.

Nicholas Fridd, prosecuting, said the men exchanged words outside the pub before a tussle ensued and Foster was disarmed of a hammer.

Shortly after Foster retrieved the hammer and used it to bash Mr Ross' car, Mr Fridd said.

Foster then left but returned armed with a thin, silver hammer which turned out to be a screwdriver.

Alec Small, defending, said "bad blood" between the men led to his client losing control and reacting with anger.

Mr Small told the court: "He accepts his actions were completely and wholly disproportionate.

"He accepts criminal damage to Mr Ross' car.

"He accepts going back 20 minutes later was a completely indefensible act.

"He accepts going back with a screwdriver was stupid."
