July 02--A man serving a state prison sentence on a drug conviction was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail after being charged with the 2013 fatal shooting of a bystander during a fight over a woman, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Dwayne Anderson, 32, was charged with first-degree murder after he was arrested at the Hill Correctional Center, where he is serving a two-year sentence for a possession of a control substance conviction.
Anderson has been charged with the killing of Jason Jernigan, 27, on Nov. 2, 2013. According to prosecutors, in 2013 Anderson and a friend were involved in a dispute with an acquaintance of Jernigan's over a woman.
In September 2013, the men were involved in at least two physical altercations, including an incident resulting in gunfire, causing Anderson to collide with a parked car and injure his shoulder while trying to escape, prosecutors said.
On the night of Nov. 2, 2013, Anderson attempted to retaliate by ambushing his intended target in the 3300 block of West Van Buren Street on Chicago's West Side, prosecutors said.
According to witnesses, Anderson emerged from a vacant lot and started shooting at the man he believed to be responsible for his earlier injury. While the intended target hid behind an SUV, Jernigan of the 3400 block of West Adams Street, who had been attempting to flee, was struck multiple times at close range and died at the scene, prosecutors said.
A female witness who was in the area flagged down a passing patrol car, but Anderson fled into an awaiting vehicle, prosecutors said.
The case remained cold until December 2014, when a witness revealed conversations he had with Anderson in which Anderson acknowledged that he killed Jernigan, prosecutors said. Anderson also expressed confidence that he would not be identified as the shooter because he was not known in the area where the shooting occurred, prosecutors said.
Anderson appeared in bond court Wednesday at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building before Judge James Brown.
