A man was wounded in a shooting Saturday evening in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

The 36-year-old was driving in the 7900 block of South State Street about 6 p.m. when he heard gunfire and realized he was shot, Chicago police said. A green SUV was seen fleeing the area.

The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his side, police said. His condition stabilized.

Area South detectives are investigating.
