Man critically injured in M4 accident that closed part of motorway

A man is critically ill after a car crashed off the M4 and collided with trees.

The 39-year-old driver of a Toyota, from the Cardiff area was taken to the University Hospital of Wales where his condition remains critical.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash that happened at around 5.55pm on Monday (March 9).

It was on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between junction 36 Sarn and junction 35 Miskin.

Police a white Toyota RAV 4, which was travelling between the two junctions, left the carriageway to the nearside, colliding with trees.

A spokesman said they don't yet know what caused the car to come off the motorway.

The eastbound carriageway was closed for about six hours for investigative work to be undertaken and the recovery of the vehicle. 

A spokesman said: "Motorists are thanked for their patience and understanding while the road closure was in place."

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the collision, or anyone may have witnessed the driving of the vehicle prior to the collision to contact South Wales Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting reference number 2000086112.
