Man critically injured after 'serious' town centre assault before Christmas

A man aged in his 50s was seriously injured after he was attacked in a town centre just days before Christmas, Greater Manchester Police has revealed.

Police have arrested a 58-year-old man in connection with the assault, detectives in Wigan have confirmed, although it's not been said what offence he's being held on suspicion of.

Emergency services were called to what police described as a 'serious assault' in Wigan town centre at 5pm on Thursday night. The victim, a man aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital with what police called 'serious injuries'.

He hasn't been named but it's understood he remained in hospital for treatment today, Friday. No further details have been provided and no exact location given.

The force said officers 'worked tirelessly' to make the arrest in the aftermath - and issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Writing on Facebook on Friday, GMP Wigan West said: "Officers in Wigan quickly arrest suspect after a serious assault last night. Yesterday afternoon (Thursday 22 December), just before 5pm, GMP were called to reports of an assault in Wigan Town Centre.
