Man shot while trying to rob off-duty Chicago police officer in Calumet Heights, officials say

A man was shot and critically wounded by an off-duty Chicago police officer during an attempted robbery in Calumet Heights on the South Side Monday night, officials said.

The man approached the officer in the 2400 block of East 92nd Street around 5:45 p.m., Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern said.

The two exchanged gunfire and the man was hit, Ahern said. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, fire officials said.

The officer was not injured, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene. Ahern released no other details.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating the incident.

The officer will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, Ahern said.
