Man critical in hospital after car came off the road and hit a large metal sign in Northumberland

An investigation is under way after a collision in Northumberland left a man in critical condition.

Emergency services were called to the one-vehicle collision on the A68 near Riding Mill on Thursday afternoon.

Shortly before 3.50pm, a grey Citroen Picasso travelling northbound towards the Riding Mill roundabout junction with the A695 had come off the road and collided with a large metal sign.

The male driver, 64, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains critical.

Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Officers want to speak to anyone who was travelling near the collision and who may have seen the grey Picasso driving in the area.

"They have also asked drivers to check any dashcam footage as they look to build a clearer picture of what caused the collision.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 659 25/03/21."
