Man critical after head-on crash in Hunter

A man has been taken to hospital after a head-on crash in the Hunter on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to Leggetts Drive, about 1km from Pelaw Main, about 3.15pm after a Toyota Corolla and a Ford Territory collided.

The male driver of the Toyota was trapped for a short time before he was air-lifted to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The female driver of the Ford was assessed at the scene by paramedics.

Hunter Valley Police District officers set up a crime scene and the Crash investigation Unit was expected to attend.

Leggetts Drive remained closed at about 5pm and was expected to be shut for some time, with diversions in place at Whitebridge Road and Greta Street. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area.

Investigators are calling for anyone who saw the crash to contact them either on the Crime Stoppers website or on the phone line at 1800 333 000.
