Worksite closed after man falls several metres from scaffolding

The man fell from scaffolding at the site shortly after 9:00am.

A man in his early 20s has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after falling several metres from scaffolding at a construction site in Canberra's north.

The ACT Ambulance Service responded to the incident at the Bloc development site on Challis Street, Dickson, after receiving an emergency call at 9:10am this morning.

Paramedics assessed and treated the man for multiple injuries, before transporting him to hospital in a critical condition.

WorkSafe ACT inspectors attended the site a short time later, stopping work and issuing a non-disturbance notice.

In a statement, they said the man was understood to have fallen "from a height of 8 to 10 metres".

The ACT's Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones said "other materials" on the ground "may have exacerbated his injuries."

"We understand that, due to the nature of that fall, [his injuries] were extensive and multiple," he said.

Mr Jones said an investigation was underway, and the site would be closed "for some time".

He also said all workers on the site were receiving counselling.

"Any workplace injury and incident is always a concern and a worry for WorkSafe," he said.

"I encourage all employers to make sure safety is their number one for all their workers, and for workers to take their time and make sure they follow all the safety procedures on all work sites, including construction."

When asked whether WorkSafe had attended the site before, Mr Jones confirmed they had, and were satisfied it was meeting safety requirements.

"WorkSafe regularly attends all major building sites, including this site, and we were satisfied with the general safety activity on that site," he said.
