Man 'covered in blood' stumbles into Asda after night of attacks

A man was arrested following a spate of attacks and a robbery in Southport town centre last night.

Emergency services were called after reports of a man attacking members of the public in Southport town centre, at around 8pm on Monday night.

Two men were assaulted in separate incidents close to the Asda store on Central 12 retail park.

One witness described seeing a man walk into the Asda supermarket 'covered in blood'.

Meanwhile another witness said a victim was attacked from behind on Zetland Street, in the town centre.

A short time later, another man also had his mobile phone stolen at a bus stop on Hoghton Street, a short distance from the town centre assaults.

A 46 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and and robbery by patrol officers and remains in custody.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We have arrested a 46 year-old man on suspicion of assault and robbery following a number of incidents in Southport town centre last night, Monday 16th December.

"Officers were contacted to reports two men were assaulted in separate incidents close to the Asda store on Central 12 retail park and in a further incident a man had his mobile phone stolen on Hoghton Street.

"Nobody was seriously hurt during the incidents.

"A 46 year-old man, who is from the Southport area, was arrested by patrols and is currently in custody where he will be questioned by officers."
