Man could 'lose his sight' after corrosive substance thrown in his face

A man could 'lose his sight' after he had a corrosive substance thrown at him during an unprovoked attack.

The man was standing next to a car on Milton Street, Sutton Manor, when two men dressed in bubble jackets chucked the mystery substance in his face.

The victim immediately had breathing difficulties and irritation to his eyes with doctors warning he could lose his sight.

Initially officers were unsure what kind of substance had been thrown but Merseyside Police say tests have now confirmed the substance was corrosive and attack was targeted.

However, the exact type of substance used in the asault remains a mystery at this point.

The man was taken to hospital shortly after the assault on Sunday around 9.20pm.

Police are investigating and asking for anyone with more information to come forward.

Police are carrying out house-to-house enquiries and detectives will also be examining CCTV footage in a bid to identify the offenders.

Detective Inspector Lisa Ryan of Merseyside Police said: “This was an unprovoked attack and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances in relation to the incident. The investigation is in the very early stages and we are working to determine what was thrown at the victim.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Milton Street who may have witnessed the incident, or two men in bubble jackets acting suspiciously in the area before or after the incident.”

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC, or call 101 quoting reference 0873 of 14 April or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
