Man convicted of kidnapping and raping Irish nanny in California

A man has been convicted of kidnapping and raping an Irish nanny in California.

Rodney Taurean Lewis, 35, is awaiting sentencing and could face life in prison for an attack on the Irishwoman who was working in the US as an au pair.

Mr Lewis was convicted of kidnapping with the intent to rape in a US court on Tuesday.

Defence attorney Jim Reilly told a local newspaper that Mr Lewis met the woman at a pub on August 19, 2011.

He said that the woman had arrived with a man who is now her husband.

Mr Lewis approached the woman while her now-husband was in the bathroom, as he saw she was looking for her mobile phone on the floor.

Mr Reilly said that CCTV from the bar shows the pair talking, taking shots of tequila and touching each other, and the woman is seen kissing Mr Lewis a few times.

In testimony the woman said she left with Mr Lewis because he said he would help her recover the phone from a friend, and blacked out.

Prosecuting attorney Jonathan Beardsley said that Mr Lewis took the woman home and raped her either at the house or nearby.

Defence attorney Mr Reilly argued that Mr Lewis drove the woman from the bar and that they had consensual sex in the car.

However mobile phone records showed that Mr Lewis had driven further than he said he had travelled.

The woman, who was in her early 20s at the time, was found partially undressed the next morning in Greer Park, Palo Alto, near San Francisco.

She was wearing the clothes she had been wearing the night before, but her skirt had been pushed up and her underwear was exposed.

Mr Lewis initially lied about having had sex with the woman, but Mr Reilly argued this was because he didn't want to admit to cheating on his now-wife.

A jury of seven women and five men spent less than a day deliberating, and reached a verdict at around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
