March 27--A Bolingbrook man was convicted of attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery Thursday in connection with an August 2013 incident where he struck a police officer in the head with a metal pipe and was then shot by police.
Levan C. Davis, 22, faces between six and 30 years in prison when he is sentenced May 28, according to a release from the Will County State's Attorney's Office.
Davis was shot after striking the officer and hospitalized, police said at the time.
"The judge found Davis guilty but mentally ill, which means he is eligible to receive mental health treatment while he serves his time in a state prison," the release states.
Police officers Eli Limacher and Jason Mitchem responded to a report of domestic violence Aug. 7, 2013, at Davis' Bolingbrook residence.
Davis had a history of mental illness and contacts with police, and had threatened to kill his father during an argument over the TV remote control, according to the office.
Officers found Davis in the garage, shouting obscenities.
He picked up a 4-foot metal pipe and struck Limacher in the head, according to the office.
"Officer Mitchem shot Davis twice, once in the arm and once in the back, to protect his fellow officer from further injury," the release states. "Officer Limacher suffered a serious injury during the attack."
Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow lauded the officers' "tremendous courage as well as restraint during a volatile situation that could have turned deadly in an instant.
"The guilty verdict handed down today in the criminal case assures a prison sentence for Levan Davis," Glasgow said.
