A man is assisting detectives in relation to a suspected hit and run motorcycle crash on the Gold Coast in which the brother of NRL player Tom Opacic was killed.

Jakob Opacic, 28, died at the scene of the incident, at Natural Bridge on Friday morning.

Police say preliminary information indicated he was earlier involved in a verbal altercation with two men on Nerang Murwillumbah Road in Numinbah Valley, just after after 10am.

Mr Opacic then rode off south along Nerang Murwillumbah Road for approximately three kilometres where he crashed.

Police said on Friday he'd argued with the two men on the same road outside Numinbah Correctional Centre.

Nine News reported that Mr Opacic, whose brother Tom plays for the Parramatta Eels, had been at the jail visiting a woman on the day of her release.

The network said it was suspected he had been run off the road by a car, possibly a black sedan.

However police say the circumstances of the argument are under investigation and they have not confirmed that information.

A Queensland Police spokesman said late on Saturday morning a man had surrendered into custody at Laidley shortly after 2am and was assisting with inquiries.
