Man coaxed off hospital roof after almost eight-hour stand-off

Rescue teams coaxed a distressed man off the roof of Paisley’s maternity unit after an almost eight-hour stand-off.

Police negotiators talked him down after he scaled the building at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Fire crews had been on site since the alarm was raised around noon yesterday.

A visitor to the hospital told of their fears for his safety.

He said: “The place was swarming with police and the fire brigade.

“The boy was just standing up there.

“He was up there for what seemed to be an age.

“He didn’t look very old, he was just a young lad.

“It was a decent drop down.

“He would have been quite badly hurt if he fell.”

The man refused to leave after climbing onto the roof around 30ft up.

It is not known whether the man was a patient at the hospital.

Dozens of cops were sent to seal off the ward.

Specialists were drafted in to talk him down from the building off Corsebar Road.

The man — wearing a white hooded sweatshirt — could be seen standing near the edge.

Concerned onlookers watched on as he refused to budge.

A NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde spokesperson said: “This was reported immediately to the police.

“They are now on site with the fire service dealing with the situation.

“Our staff are offered any support required.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue scrambled an engine with ladders and a rapid response unit.

A spokesman said: “We received a call to assist emergency service partners at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to the scene and crews were in attendance.”

The man has been taken to a medical facility for assessment.
