A man who scaled the National Christmas Tree outside the White House Friday night climbed down safely before being transported to a Washington area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
The man who was believed to be suffering "emotional distress" did not appear to suffer any physical injuries, said National Park Service Sgt. Eduardo Delgado.
Two negotiators were called to the scene to talk the unidentified man out of the tree around 5:45 p.m., the time he was first discovered. The man spent about an hour in the tree before coming down on his own accord.
The pageant area, where spectators can view the tree, has been cordoned off Friday but is expected to reopen Saturday.
Officers from the Secret Service and the National Park Service were on the scene.
The tree is not on the grounds of the White House and it was not believed anyone inside the building was in danger.
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were present at the lighting of the 30-foot-tall blue spruce in November.
