Man climbs cliffs to rescue sheep - only to be told it was a terrible idea

One baaa-d move and it could all have gone horribly wrong for this good shepherd.

Passing walkers filmed the man climbing down to save the stranded sheep after it had lost its footing and tumbled over the rock face.

The man launched his terrifying rescue mission after spotting the distressed sheep as he walked along the cliff tops between Porthgain and Aberieddy in Pembrokeshire.

After edging down the cliff face, he grabbed the animal by the scruff of its neck, and held on to the rocks with his fingertips as he hauled the 8st animal to safety.

The man has been hailed a hero by animal lovers but given a ticking off by the RSPCA (ANDREA WILLIAMS)

It then happily scampered off into the grass.

Andrea Williams, who posted the shots online, wrote: “We were spectators to an amazing act of human kindness. There were definitely some hand in mouth moments. Well done that man!”

But the Broad Haven coastguard said the man had taken unnecessary risks.

The RSPCA had been called and were arranging a rescue.

The coastguard said: “It could have ended so differently. Putting yourself in danger is never a good idea.”

RSPCA inspector Ellie West said the rescue could have backfired as the sheep might have panicked. She said: “It’s really common for sheep to jump into the sea as we approach them in situations like this.”
