Man claims 'horrendous' food poisoning after eating raw scampi at Wetherspoon

A man claims he got food poisoning after being served a piece of “cold and raw scampi” which he claims was mixed into his chicken wings at his local Wetherspoon. David Caruso, 36, visited The Tumble Inn, in Pontypridd, over the Easter Bank Holiday with his family. He said that after the meal he experienced stomach cramps and sickness a couple of days later.

He said: “I ordered three plates for £14.24. I had nachos, ham and mushroom pizza and chicken wings. It was all was going well until the chicken wings. I saw one which looked a bit strange and thought it must be a wing, but I bit into it and found out it was freezing cold and raw.”

David claims he notified a manager who believed “a bit of scampi was put in by mistake” and offered him a drink as an apology, but David said the incident made him “feel sick and put off” getting anything else. He claims that the incident was also logged in the pub's incident book and he was refunded for the meal, which came back into his wife's account five days later.

However, he was “disappointed” in their response given the fact it put him off his food and how serious the incident could have been if it had happened to someone with a shellfish allergy. To ensure this would not happen again, David contacted Wetherspoon's head office that same evening.

A couple of days later, on Wednesday, April 12, David claims he had "horrendous" food poisoning which lasted 12 hours, which he claims was from his meal at Wetherspoon. He said that he received limited correspondence before he was asked to fill in a questionnaire, detailing everything he had eaten seven days before his meal at The Tumble Inn.

On May 3, he received an email stating that JD Wetherspoon had received his questionnaire and the matter is currently being investigated. A spokesperson from JD Wetherspoon said: “Wetherspoon takes every food poisoning complaint extremely seriously. We are currently completing a thorough investigation and will go back to Mr Caruso as soon as it is completed. All kitchen staff at the Tumble Inn receive full food hygiene training which is regularly refreshed and must follow a number of detailed food safety process when preparing food. The pub has held a 5-star rating under the national ‘Score on the Doors’ food hygiene inspection scheme since 2010 with eight consecutive 5-star inspections. Wetherspoon’s average rating for all its pubs under the scheme is 4.98 with 98.4% of our pubs holding a 5-star rating.”
