KOCHI: In Thrissur district of Kerala, a man identifying himself as a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses surrendered to the police, claiming responsibility for the multiple explosions that took place during a Christian religious gathering in Kalamassery, on Sunday morning, police said.

The explosions resulted in the unfortunate death of one woman and left over 45 people injured, with some in critical condition, as stated by ADGP Law and Order M R Ajith Kumar.

"The man's name is Dominic Martin. He also gave evidence supporting his claim. We are examining it presently. We are also examining his claims and the reasons given for carrying out the act," the ADGP said.

The ADGP also said that the man also claims to be a follower of the Jehovah's Witnesses Christian religious group with its roots in the United States in the 19th century.

When asked about whether this incident could be attributed to a failure of police intelligence, the ADGP defended the effectiveness of all branches within the police force.

Earlier, State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb informed the media in Thiruvananthapuram that, according to preliminary investigations, the explosions were caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and further examinations are underway.
