Man City youngsters criticised by coach after thumping 7-1 win over Newcastle

Manchester City Under-18s tore Newcastle to shreds at the weekend...and then came under fire in the dressing room review.

Gareth Taylor's side won 7-1 at the training ground on Saturday thanks to a hat-trick from James McAtee and further goals from Sammy Robinson, Oscar Bobb, and Cole Palmer. Following on from a 4-0 win at West Brom in their opening game, it makes for an emphatic start to the season for the academy team.

But just as performance didn't match the scoreline for Pep Guardiola's side at the Etihad later that day, such a comprehensive win for the Under-18s was not enough to impress their coach.

While he did go on to praise the efforts of some individuals he was left wanting by the collective.

“I am pleased with that aspect (two consecutive wins) and it was a good score line on Saturday, but I wasn’t happy with the players and I let them know that afterwards," Taylor told the club website .

“I thought we were poor in the second period and not great in the first.

“We work hard here day in, day out and the game at the end of the week is the icing on the cake and I felt that we too often came off the hymn sheet. They are a talented group and a good bunch of lads and we have high standards."
