Man City youngster Phil Foden compared to Manchester United legend

Man City's hottest young prospect Phil Foden has been compared to legendary Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes by Owen Hargreaves.

The comparison comes after Foden once again dazzled on the pitch and gave a man of the match performance for the England U21s against Germany.

It was the City midfielder's clever turn which deceived two defenders and following pass which led to a Dominic Solanke equaliser in front of the watchful eyes of Gareth Southgate.

The 18-year-old has had a productive international break as the Young Lions prepare for the U21 Euros in Italy and San Marino this summer, a tournament England are among the favourites to win.

Foden also played well in the first game, a 1-1 draw against Poland, but was especially brilliant against Germany - prompting the special praise from BT Sport pundit Hargreaves.

“I think Phil is just one of those types of players – a bit like Paul Scholes – he is one or two steps mentally ahead of everyone else," the former Bayern Munich and United midfielder said after the game.

"He makes the game look easy, he’s silky smooth, got a wand of a left foot, but his intelligence and smartness is what sets him apart.”

Despite Foden's performance England fell to their first home defeat since 2011 when Felix Uduokhai scored a late, scrappy goal.

England U21s manager Aidy Boothroyd was also full of praise for the 'exceptional' Foden, telling BT Sport: "Foden has a lovely weight of pass and he has so much talent. The more he plays with us, the better he will get. No doubt about it."
