Man City young duo sign new long-term contracts

Finley Burns and Shea Charles are the latest Manchester City players to pen long-term deals at the club.

Charles, an 18-year-old comfortable at centre-back or pushed into midfield who has progressed up through the academy from Under-9s level, signed his first professional contract in July but has impressed with his performances at EDS level and in first-team training under the watchful eye of Pep Guardiola.

Burns, another 18-year-old central defender, was signed from Southend United in 2017 for a record sum of £175,000. Having taken time to settle and learn the City philosophy, the teenager has repaid the faith shown in him. He made his professional debut in the Carabao Cup win over Wycombe in September 2021, with Guardiola afterwards comparing him to a watch for his precise timing.

Both players have signed new contracts that will keep them at the Etihad until 2027. Any decisions over a January loan move have yet to be made for either.

City are expecting a quiet January in the transfer window, having completed a club-record sale of Ferran Torres by the end of December.

England Under-21s defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis has cut short his loan deal with Anderlecht to move to Stoke for the second half of the season, while goalkeeper James Trafford is expected to make the switch from Accrington to Bolton in League One.

Midfielder Iker Pozo is in talks about another spell at FC Eindhoven, and fellow midfielder Tommy Doyle is also looking for a new challenge after struggling for minutes at Hamburg.
