Capable of operating behind the main striker or from a wide right position, his versatility has handed manager Pep Guardiola a welcome selection headache given the plethora of attacking options the Spaniard has at his disposal.

Rayan Ait-Nouri is on the bench so will have to wait to make his first Man City appearance after joining from Wolves. Nico O’Reilly gets the nod at left-back.

Rodri does not make a first start since last September. The Spaniard has made a full recovery from an ACL injury but is only on the bench, as new signing Tijjani Reijnders starts and Phil Foden is also involved from the off.

Savinho and Jeremy Doku start on the wings with Omar Marmoush through the middle, as Erling Haaland is named on a strong bench, along with new club captain Bernardo Silva.

City are without the injured Mateo Kovacic whilst Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish and James McAtee were not named in the Club World Cup squad.

Starting XI: Ederson, Lewis, Reis, Ake, O’Relly, Reijnders, Foden, Cherki, Savinho, Marmoush, Doku
