Man City worry after Raheem Sterling injury during England training

Manchester City have been handed a blow by reports that Raheem Sterling is an injury concern for England ahead of their Nations League match against Belgium.

The City forward was rested from England's friendly win over Ireland in midweek to keep him fresh for the clash with Belgium on Sunday but the Telegraph report that he picked up a problem in training on Saturday.

It does not seem a serious injury, with Sterling set to undergo checks ahead of the game, but the news will likely increase the debate over how much international football should be played during a hectic season.

Sterling has played in every game for City this season but sat out the last international break due to a hamstring problem.

England boss Gareth Southgate is unlikely to risk Sterling if there is a chance it will aggravate any issue the attacker has, having voiced his sympathies with clubs over the busy schedule.

Southgate has already seen Liverpool defender Joe Gomez pick up a serious injury during this international break, prompting the England manager to urge football authorities to reassess whether the current schedule is beneficial to player welfare.

Should Sterling not be risked, it is likely that Aston Villa star Jack Grealish will take his place.

This is the second injury problem City have seen in the international break, with Nathan Ake withdrawing from the Netherlands squad after suffering a suspected hamstring injury just six minutes into their friendly against Spain.

Ake has returned to City for the injury to be assessed and there is currently no timeframe on how long he may be out for.

The centre-back's injury has been offset by the news that Fernandinho has resumed training.
