Man City Women to face Real Madrid in new-look Champions League format

Manchester City Women face a difficult-looking test against Real Madrid as they look to book a place in the UEFA Women's Champions League group stages.

City reached the quarter finals of last years' competition, losing to eventual winners Barcelona. It was the third year in a row they exited to Spanish opposition, with two successive aggregate defeats to Atletico Madrid.

Now, City enter the Champions League at the second round stage, as the competition begins a new format that incorporates a group stage.

Replacing the round-of-16 knockout stage will be a 16-team group stage, but City's second place finish in the Women's Super League last season means they must get past Real Madrid to book a spot in a group.

Holders Barcelona along with Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are already confirmed for the group stage.

To join them, City must play a two-legged Round Two tie, which was confirmed to be against Real Madrid in Sunday's draw. Gareth Taylor's side will face Real in Madrid for the first leg on August 31 or September 1, before welcoming the Spanish side to the Academy Stadium a week later on September 8 or 9.

City begin their WSL campaign on the weekend between those Champions League fixtures, taking on Everton on September 4.
