Man City Women's new signing on the World Cup and playing for England

Ellen White revealed England have not shied away from their desire to win the Women’s World Cup and be number one in the world.

England will be among the favourites going in to the tournament alongside hosts France, holders USA and European champions The Netherlands.

Manchester City’s new signing admitted: “We put that pressure on ourselves a little bit, we have made no bones about it; we want to win the World Cup and we want to be number one in the world.”

The Lionesses remain down to earth, however, as White said: “We try and stay humble and respectful within camp. It is important for us to stay in our own bubble and not let anything from the outside influence us.”

Despite the humility surrounding the Lionesses’ preparations the squad has come together with both youth and experience. The 30-year-old described the mood as an “excitement and buzz”.

England’s group games have sold out ahead of the World Cup with their Road to France series of friendlies following suit as the women’s game continues to grow exponentially.

The striker also described the honour she feels at participating in her third major senior tournament. She added: “It is [the] next level: to stand on the pitch and for the whole crowd to be wanting England to do well is an incredible feeling. You get goosebumps standing there, doing the national anthem and people cheering. You can never replicate that, and you can never take it for granted.”

White will now focus on England’s upcoming friendly with New Zealand at Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium on Saturday June 1.
