Man City Women's goalkeeper makes incredible charity gesture after historic first derby

They were handcrafted specially for the first ever women's Manchester derby.

Now these brilliant 'Manchester bee' boots are being auctioned off to raise money for a cause close to the hearts of all footballers.

Manchester City Women's FC goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck wore the hand-crafted Puma boots at the Etihad and kept a clean sheet in them as City beat neighbours Manchester United Women's FC 1-0 earlier this month.

They feature a multi-coloured emblem of the Manchester worker bee, which became a symbol of the city's resilience after the Arena atrocity of May, 2017.

The game was an historic meeting - the first women's derby day in the city.

Now Ellie is auctioning off her orange and black boots in aid of the Darby-Rimmer MND Foundation.

The foundation, which is raising money to fight motor-neurone disease, was co-founded by Stephen Darby, City and England captain Steph Houghton's husband.

The ex-Liverpool, Bradford City, Rochdale and Bolton defender announced his retirement from football aged 29 in September last year after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Together with his close friend and forces veteran Chris Rimmer, they also hope to raise awareness and support research into the degenerative illness.

Announcing the auction on Twitter, City's Number One Ellie, 19, said they would go to the highest bidder and every penny raised would go to the foundation.

The stopper has been praised on social media for a wonderful gesture after an 'awesome performance' in the game, and said the foundation was a cause 'really close to us all'.

The bespoke, match-worn boots are size seven-and-a-half and were designed for the derby day clash.

The highest bidder will receive confirmation and win the boots, which Ellie will also sign.

Full-back Darby began his career at Liverpool after coming through the academy and went on to make more than 200 appearances for Bradford City before joining Bolton Wanderers in July 2017, reuniting with manager Phil Parkinson.

He also represented Rochdale, Swindon and Notts County in loan spells.
