Manchester City Women are in talks to sign United States defender Abby Dahlkemper, the PA news agency understands.

Dahlkemper, part of the US team that won the 2019 Women’s World Cup, currently plays in her homeland for the North Carolina Courage.

The 27-year-old centre-back made her senior international debut in 2016 and has a total of 62 caps to her name.

Following a loan spell playing in Australia for Adelaide United, Dahlkemper helped the Western New York Flash win the National Women’s Soccer League in 2016, and she subsequently also lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2019 after they had evolved into the North Carolina Courage.

Should she sign for City, Dahlkemper will be joining US team-mates Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle at the Women’s Super League (WSL) club.

Gareth Taylor’s City are currently fourth in the WSL table with 18 points from nine matches, eight behind leaders Manchester United, who have played a game more.
