Man City Women boss Gareth Taylor rues Karima Taieb errors in Chelsea defeat

Gareth Taylor admitted that Karima Taieb should have saved both of Chelsea's first-half goals in Manchester City's FA Cup semi-final defeat on Sunday.

City, struggling in the league owing to a raft of injuries to key first-team players, had a golden opportunity to reach an FA Cup final as the final rounds of last season's competition are played this season.

The Blues were bright in the first half against Chelsea, but the visitors took full control of the tie midway through the opening period as Taieb - the third choice goalkeeper - let Erin Cuthbert's shot through her hands, and four minutes later allowed Melanie Leupolz's routine effort to nestle in the bottom corner.

Chelsea exerted their dominance after that point, and Taylor accepted the two errors knocked the momentum out of his City side that they struggled to recover, with Beth England's late third confirming the result.

He said: "I need to look again, but I've had a quick glance. Yeah you'd expect them to be saved.

"It's easy from the sidelines and when you're in that moment you don't know if it's come through some legs., especially the second goal. I'm more concerned with the first that we switched off defensively and you can't do that against a team like Chelsea."

Taylor also said the two goals in the first half dented his side's confidence after a solid start, ultimately deciding the tie.

"The first half was where we lost the game," he said.

"We were in decent control in the first 20 minutes, it was quite good and as soon as we conceded in quick succession, it affected us. We had a good conversation at half time, changed things around. The second half was okay, we showed spirit but those first goals decided the tie.

"Before the third goal we had some moments, Lauren was dangerous. We needed to improve our quality in the final third. At half time I thought we were still in the game. We showed our spirit in the second half but we need to improve our quality of the play.

"We've got talented players, but we've got problems in the back line with a lack of options. For the way we play in our build up, today playing through the thirds we looked dangerous and got a chance to score. It dented the confidence the two goals going in and affected the team and took us until half time for us to rally."
