Man City withdraw from European Super League as FSG silence at Liverpool continues

Manchester City have officially started formal proceedings to withdraw from the European Super League.

They were officially one of 12 football clubs across Europe, that included Liverpool and every member of the Premier League's so-called 'Big Six', to announce on Sunday that they had formed a closed shop breakaway competition.

Under the plans, which had been underwritten with funding from JP Morgan with the value somewhere between $3.8bn (£2.7bn) and $5bn, 15 clubs - including all 12 of the founder members - would be guaranteed entry into the competition every year regardless of their finishing position in respective domestic leagues.

The proposals sparked immediate condemnation from the football world with supporters, players involved with the clubs, managers and pundits all hitting out against the plans that had been clearly made by owners behind the scenes.

And now, with Chelsea also reportedly set to leave, Man City have confirmed that they are the first club to begin the exit process in what is a huge blow to those who set up the competition and pushed for its creation like Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli.

An official statement on the club's website read: "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League."

FSG have stayed completely silent on the proposals and on Tuesday night at 9pm, Liverpool's players led by Jordan Henderson posted messages across social media to say they did not like the European Super League and did not want it to happen.
